Three "First Steps Early Intervention/Advocacy Programs" established in Lethbridge and Edmonton, Alberta
Lethbridge and Edmonton joins forces with Seattle's award winning Birth to Three Early Intervention Program for High Risk Drug and Alcohol Affected Women.
The First Steps Program is a home visitation model, structured on the following core beliefs:
- Advocates never give up on a woman, and women are never asked to leave the program.
- Clients define and evaluate their personal goals every four months, which advocates help co-ordinate with program goals.
- Advocates develop a network of relationships with everyone involved in a woman's life.
- Advocates provide advocacy for other family members as needed.
- Advocates connect a woman’s service providers with each other to create an effective plan and link women with available community services.
- Advocates assist women to identify and resolve service barriers.
- Advocacy is provided for the mother and child, regardless of custody issues.
